Description: The purpose of WIDS feature data sets is to indicate the location of known or suspected waste sites. The mapped locations provide a starting basis for remediation planning and field activities. The mapped sites are also used during excavation and drilling activities to identifying potential hazards at the work site. A mapped waste site may contain more than one polygon, line, and/or point feature. This shapefile contains a representation of all of the point, line and polygon features that make up mapped waste sites at the Department of Energy's Hanford Site. The spatial data in this shapefile was compiled from many different sources including translation from annotated field maps, estimates based on published reports, digitizing from aerial photography and scanned drawings, and global positioning surveys. The mapped location is based on the best available information. As more information is acquired through the declassification of documents and photos, newly identiifed drawings, and field work associated with remediation planning, the mapped location is modified to account for the newly identified information. None of the WIDS mapping is absolute. Waste sites, especially associated pipelines, may have been modified in the field without ever updating the design drawing. In some cases, excavation has shown that the construction and location of a waste site was completely different from what is shown on approved "as-built" drawings.
