Title: Orchards (100-OL-1, Dec 2015)
Abstract: Author:
Comments: Prior to the creation of the Hanford Site by the Department of War in February 1943, the land along the Columbia River within the boundaries of the Site was used for various farming and orchard operations. Lead arsenate was the pesticide of choice on these lands for codling moth control for most tree-fruits. The application of the pesticide, along with other orchard activities, ceased in 1943 when the government took control of the lands. Lead arsenate residues persist in the soil today in some of the old orchard lands on the Site. The 100-OL-1 Operable Unit (OU) was created in May 2012 through the Hanford Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order by the US Department of Energy, US Environmental Protection Agency, and Washington State Department of Ecology. The 100-OL-1 OU includes approximately 20 km2(5,000 acres) of discontinuous orchard lands from the 100-Area of the Hanford Site (south-side of Columbia River) down to the Hanford townsite. The 100-OL-1 OU has previously been delineated into smaller decision units (DU), ranging in areas up to several hundred acres each. The purpose of the decision units is to provide defined areas to be evaluated for lead arsenate residues. A pilot study was conducted in 2014 to evaluate four of these decision units to optimize the sampling approach implemented in the remedial investigation. The results of the pilot study highlighted the need to refine the decision unit boundaries. At some of the decision units, it appeared that the boundary was not inclusive of the area that had been farmed and/or in orchard lands. Furthermore, the pilot study concluded that the decision units should each have a defined area of 50 acres or less. Finally, many of the decision unit boundaries can be realigned with established roads and land use changes, based on both current and historical aerial imagery. As a result of the recommendations provided in the pilot study, the boundaries of the decision units within the 100-OL-1 OU have been redrawn to be included in the 100-OL-1 work plan and implemented in the remedial investigation.
