Comment: GWIA polygons were first defined in 2003 and published in the “Hanford Site Monitoring Report for Fiscal Year 2002” (PNNL-14187). GWIAs were defined using the Groundwater Operable Unit (GWOU) boundaries available at the time and extending the boundaries to include the groundwater plumes originating in the corresponding GWOU to the Columbia River Centerline to the north and east and to the basalt above the water table to the south. GWIAs were updated in 2008 to align with the revised GWOU boundaries available in 2008 and published in the “Hanford Site Monitoring Report for Fiscal Year 2007” (DOE/RL-2008-01 Rev 0). Differences between the GWIAs for 2003 and 2008 include: Extending the 200-BP-5 boundary north to the Columbia River and moving the southeastern boundary of the 200-BP-5 GWIA southward.Aligning the Northern and Western boundaries of the 200-UP-1 GWIA with the updated GWOU boundaries.GWIAs were updated for 2012 as represented in this feature data class and documented in SGW-54058 Revision 0. The GWIAs were revised to better align some interest areas with GWOU boundaries, and to ensure that each well within the Hanford Site boundary is geographically within an interest area. Differences between the GWIAs for 2008 and 2012 include:Addition of the Wahluke Slope and Rattlesnake Hills GWIA. This expands the GWIAs such that they encompass the entire Hanford Site.Expansion of the 300-FF-5 GWIA to the west and south to include all of the 300-FF-5 GWOU.Elimination of portion of the 1100-EM-1 GWIA south of the Hanford Site Boundary.Reduction of the onsite portion of the 1100-EM-1 GWIA to better correspond to the northwestern boundary of the 1100-EM-1 GWOU, and the area of 3 wells currently being sampled for the 1100-EM-1 OU per a Tri-Party Agreement Change Notice (TPA-CN-163).Renaming of the GWIAs without the GWOU suffix. Creation of an interest area outside the Hanford Site boundary named “Off-Site”. Wells that are sampled as part of Hanford related groundwater sampling outside of the Hanford Site boundary will be assigned to the “Off-Site” Interest Area.
